Harry Wright, Sr. Obituary

On Monday, March 4, 2024, Harry A. Wright, Sr., of Malvern, PA, went home to be with the Lord. He was 94 years old, and a lifelong resident of Chester County.

Harry A. Wright Sr. was born on April 10, 1929, to the late Hamilton Edward Wright and Mary Elizabeth Hopkins.  One of 12 children, he grew up in Berwyn Pennsylvania (in a section affectionately known as Church Hill).

Harry was educated in the Tredyffrin-Easttown school system and proudly joined the graduating class of 1947.  It was there that he first realized his love for Wood Shop and the Industrial Arts; the start of what would become his trademark for home, church and community projects.

On October 2, 1952, Harry married the former Alice Louise Lane in Port Deposit, Maryland.  Five children were born out of this union.

In 1953 at the age of 24, he was hired by National Rolling Mills of Radnor Pennsylvania as a handyman that performed many duties.  He quickly moved up the ladder to Roll Form Operator and relocated to Malvern Pennsylvania in 1957.    Harry always kept in mind the words of one of his former teachers: whatever job you do, be it great or small, do your best or not at all.

In 1967, he was promoted to the position of Shop Superintendent.  The year 1970 found him promoted to the position of Production Manager which he held until his retirement in 1992. Harry was so proud to be the first African American to hold a management position thereby allowing him the opportunity to participate in the profit-sharing program offered by the company.

Harry’s love for sports manifested in many ways; player, coach, and fan. He participated in many baseball leagues. He was especially proud of coaching his wife and sisters as part of the Main Line Chicks basketball team.    He was an avid sportsman and a dedicated fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Harry’s love of family and friends was often displayed by the many barbecues he and Alice hosted.  His family, job, church and community were the pinnacle of his heart.

He leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Jacquie Delorme, a son Harry Jr. (Renee) a daughter Karen Gomez (James), 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 1 great- great-grandchild and a host of dear relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife, Alice Wright, He was preceded in death by a grandson, James Gomez, Jr.; two daughters, Sheila Curtis and Gail Wright, and a son-in-law, Larry Delorme.
